Prof. Benjamin Sango is a seasoned management professional and a passionate advocate for refugee rights, currently serving as the Co-Founder and Executive Director of L'Afrikana. As a refugee himself, born in the midst of the Congo Crisis, Prof. Sango’s life and career have been shaped by personal experiences of displacement, which have driven his dedication to the empowerment and support of marginalized communities. His leadership at L'Afrikana reflects his lifelong commitment to creating lasting change for refugees and displaced persons.
Prof. Sango holds a Bachelor's degree in Business Management, alongside Diplomas in Business Administration, IT Management, and International Relations and Diplomacy. He has extensive experience working in seven African countries, including Kenya, South Sudan, Ethiopia, Malawi, Mozambique, Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. This vast exposure has endowed him with a deep understanding of the complex challenges facing refugees across the continent, allowing him to apply effective solutions through his work. His skills in program development, public speaking, critical thinking, and leadership have been honed through years of managing impactful projects and initiatives.

Growing up as a refugee, Prof. Sango’s story began before his birth, with his mother fleeing the instability in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 1965. The Congo Crisis, a series of civil wars following the country's independence from Belgium, left an indelible mark on his life. Born in the bush at a time when basic infrastructure like hospitals had collapsed, he grew up witnessing firsthand the brutal realities of conflict and displacement. His early life was spent constantly on the move, seeking safety in a world ravaged by war. These early experiences forged a resilience and determination that have defined his career and his mission to uplift refugee communities.
One of Prof. Sango's most significant achievements was his instrumental role in helping the late Mzee Simbi, the founder of L'Afrikana, regain control of his organization. Through his strategic guidance and negotiation skills, Prof. Sango ensured that L'Afrikana continued its vital work in supporting refugees and slum dwellers. His leadership at the organization has been transformative, spearheading initiatives in education, advocacy, and skills development for refugees and host communities alike.
Under his leadership, L'Afrikana has become a beacon of hope for refugee communities in Kenya and beyond. The organization’s programs focus on providing educational opportunities for refugees, empowering women and girls, and advocating for the rights of displaced persons. Prof. Sango’s vision is to build bridges between refugees and host communities, fostering mutual understanding and shared growth.

His professional journey has seen him take on various roles, including Director of Market Development for Baraka Commercial Company in the DRC, and Vendor Manager at Sauda Company in Kalobeyei, Kenya. His experience in business and management has been crucial in shaping L'Afrikana's programs, which emphasize economic empowerment and self-reliance for refugees.
Prof. Sango is also a skilled trainer, having led programs that prepare employees for challenging market environments. He has developed and implemented training strategies that have empowered individuals with the knowledge and skills needed to thrive, even in the most challenging circumstances. His background in IT management and international relations further enhances his ability to navigate the complexities of refugee work in a globalized world.
